I find language strange. I speak a language that sounds different to that humans speak. Even between humans, there seem to be so many ways to say even the simplest of words – Hello!

This got me thinking about words and how we are able to understand each other. So, I went about asking questions to explore more.

Do you know how many different languages are?

spoken in India? Hundreds! 398 to be exact. WOW! And that’s only in India. Can you imagine how many are spoken in the world? It makes me feel dizzy.

People in different parts of the world speak different languages. I wonder why? Every community has a different language to express their thoughts, ideas and emotions. Every day newer words are added to languages. It BLOWS my mind.

Have you noticed that one word can also express so many emotions. Like, we say “wow!” when we are amazed, we also say “wow!” when we can’t believe something. That something can be bad or good.

Language helps us tell others what we are feeling and thinking. How we say something also says what we feel. If we say, “yay!” in a happy tone, we sound excited 👏. When we say the same thing in a sarcastic tone, it means we’re not actually excited. 💁🏽‍♂

Language really has many sides to it doesn't it?

Is language just about words or is there more to it? Well, I am told, we can actually find out someone's culture from how they speak. In Japan 🎌, youngsters are not supposed to make eye contact with older people. That is to show respect. I had no idea that you can figure out which country they are from or which part of India there are from for instance.

From what I have learnt so far, words are a very powerful tool.

Words can change someone’s life, but they can also hurt that person. Sometimes, being hurt by words hurts much more than being hurt by a cut or a bruise. I guess that's why everyone says, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”

I think I get it although a pen seems quite flimsy compared to a sword! Imagine playing my video game with a pen to fight instead of a sword 😀 Until next time bye dear journal...
